Scope of Service

Types of Patients Served

The Department of Nephrology concerns itself with the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases, electrolyte and acid-base disorders and hypertension. The department provides Dialysis facility for both outpatient and inpatient for End Stage Renal Disease patients and also provides for follow-up of Renal Transplant patients.

Range of Conditions/ Diagnoses Treated

• Acute Renal Failure including:

a. Acute Tubular Necrosis
b. Acute Interstitial Nephritis
c. Acute Obstructive Nephropathy
d. Rapidly Progressive Glomerulonephritis

• Glomerular Diseases
• Chronic Kidney Disease including Diabetic and Hypertensive Nephropathy
• Electrolyte Disorders
• Acid/ Base disturbances
• Renal Stone Disease
• Renal Transplant follow-up including treatment of acute rejection episodes, infectious conditions and other complications
• Hypertension
• Urinary Tract Infections

Range of Treatments or Activities Performed

• Laboratory tests for measuring renal function including serum BUN, creatinine measurements, electrolytes, urine analysis, creatinine clearance and proteinuria measurements.
• Serologic testing such as Anti DSDNA, complements etc. for diagnosis of glomerular diseases.
• Radiologic scanning including US, CT scan
• Renal Biopsy
• MRI/ MRA and nuclear medicine scans
• Hemodialysis

a. At outpatient dialysis center
b. At inpatient dialysis room
c. Hemodialysis in the ICU
d. Continuous Renal Replacement therapy in ICU
e. Plasmapheresis-inpatient
f. Isolation facility for hemodialysis of Hepatitis B and C patients
g. Medical therapy
h. Placement of temporary hemodialysis catheters
i. Dietary and social work services for hemodialysis patients

Types of Staff Carrying Out these Activities

Staff of the Nephrology service includes:

• Consultant Nephrologist
• Specialist Nephrologist
• Resident Nephrologist
• Dialysis unit nurses supervised by Unit Nurse Supervisor and a Charge Nurse
• Dialysis unit technicians
• Dieticians
• Social worker
• Biomedical Engineer

Sites & Time of Care and Services are provided (sample data)

Nephrology services are available for both inpatients and outpatients. The OPD Nephrology clinic is open from 0800 hours-1200 hours and 1600 hours- 2000 hours from Saturday to Thursday.
Admissions of Nephrology cases are through Nephrology clinic, OPD, Dialysis Center and E.R.

Following are the Dialysis Center Shift Times:

Saturday, Monday and Wednesday:
Shift 1: 0600 hours – 1000 hours
Shift 2: 1030 hours – 1430 hours
Shift 3: 1500 hours – 1900 hours
Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday:
Shift 1: 0600 hours – 1000 hours
Shift 2: 1030 hours – 1430 hours

Fridays: Emergency cases only – inpatient

A nephrology resident and consultant are on on-call coverage 24 hours/ 7 days a week for all emergencies related to their area of subspecialty.
